OmegaT stores your translations and proposes possible translations from similar segments registered in the translation memory files. When you let OmegaT know the files that you need to translate, it looks for the files it understands based on file filtering rules, recognizes the textual parts within them, splits up the text groups according to the segmentation rules, and displays the segments one by one so that you can proceed with the translation. Imagine having to translate something from a single file to a folder containing subfolders each with a number of files in a variety of formats. For your reference, the OmegaT CAT Tool displays the translation of any word that is both present in the segment and registered in the glossary. OmegaT uses glossaries containing translations of single words or small phrases: a simplified bilingual dictionary for a specific domain. Terminology management is important for translation consistency. The OmegaT CAT Tool uses the standard tmx file format to store and access translation memories, which guarantees that you can exchange your translation material with other CAT applications supporting this file format. If you are supplied with previously created translation memories, for example by your translation agency or your client, OmegaT is able to use these as reference memories. Modifications to the original document are thus handled with greater ease. Unchanged sentences are automatically translated, while updated sentences are shown with the translation of the most similar, older sentence. These translation memories can be very useful when a document that has already been translated needs to be updated. OmegaT uses translation memories to store your previous translations and then suggest likely translations for the text you are currently working on. Translation memories can be very useful in a translation where there are numerous repetitions or reasonably similar segments of text. Files in older MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint formats can be translated following conversion to the equivalent current Microsoft Office formats, or alternatively to the Office Open XML format, which can be done in OpenOffice or LibreOffice (also free). If you are not sure if the JRE is installed on your computer use the version that comes packaged with the JRE.

Overall, OmegaT is a fantastic piece of software. The optional panes are covered in the comprehensive User’s Manual. I would recommend regularly saving and backing up your work and keeping OmegaT open until you have successfully saved your target document. Some tags seem to have no function and some documents can end up looking like 'tag soup'! You can remove the tags but then you have to format the document manually afterwards. The search function could be improved for the glossaries - currently only exact matches show up unless you use wildcard characters. The match function has limited ability to recognise less similar (fuzzy) segments.

There is a wide range of keyboard shortcuts which make OmegaT a very efficient and user-friendly tool.
